Readers Theater -10 Sessions
Readers theater is a 10 session residency. In the residency students will be guided through an interpretive activities in which readers use their voices to bring characters to life. It requires no sets, costumes, props, or memorized lines. During the 10 sessions students will be led in creating a classroom script that can be based on learning objectives in the classroom. This will give students the opportunity to deepen their learning and understanding of a particular subject. The performers goal is then to read the script together aloud effectively, enabling the audience to visualize the actions.

In the end of the residency, students will have a viewing party, with invited guest, to see their class created digital story..a story they created together. This residency provides an opportunity for the class to work together and individually on a common goal.
Stories come and Stories go- 5 Sessions
We love stories! We love to hear them and tell them. It is our most ancient way of communicating to each other. This residency will explore the art of storytelling, how storytelling was used and how we can tell stories through movement, dance, song and words. Each day, for 5 days, the Teaching Artist will introduce a story from different regions of the world. Students will explore and contrast each of the stories themes and the culture they come from. These stories will come alive for the students as they become the characters in each story through the process drama technique.
The goal of the workshop is to:
1. Introduce students to stories from different regions of the world through movement, song, dance and words.
2. Explore the culture of where the stories come from through movement, song, dance and words.
3. Create a class story
4. Class will conclude with a collective sharing of their class created story through process drama.
Very effective residency to use when students are learning about different regions and cultures.
From the Page to the Stage Contest (5th grade only) 3 sessions
Many writers dream of seeing their words, their story acted out by professional actors. Well, now the opportunity has come to schools! In each class, three students, whose stories will be juried and selected, will see their words and their story in a professional staged reading by professional actors! We are not asking students to write a play…not yet at least. But, bring us a story and our professional actors will turn the story into a script and then onto to the stage for a professional reading!
Our actors will have a pre visit to tell students what the contest is about and the parameters of the contest. Students will then have a few weeks to develop their story. Our actors will then come back to your school for a professional reading of 3 works that have been selected. After the professional reading our actors will have a follow up visit to share with students the process of how they converted the chosen stories into a play. Students will receive a template that will strengthen their narrative writing skills and guide their story into a script. This contest is for students to have fun while also strengthening their narrative writing and incorporate in their writing the details of a protagonist, antagonist, the ally, setting, conflict, tension, climax, solution and dialogue.
This performance residency emphasizes collaboration with classroom teacher. The narrative writing can be used to address and deepen understanding of different themes or topics within the curriculum. This can also be used as an assessment tool of student’s knowledge and mastery.
